Part 1
This Saturday will be a local outing. Meet at 1pm corner Walton & Thompson streets and we will depart from there.
Not sure if we will be having afternoon tea or not, will get back to you all on Wednesday night after committee meeting.
It was a good turnout on Saturday at Como Villa. After a frosty foggy start to the day , blue skies and sunshine made for a great day for a walk.
Johnny was looking for some work volunteers ,so I had to point out he did have a sign at the gate saying “No workers wanted”
About 16 walkers in the W1s did some loopy manoeuvres on the tailings ,being spotted on the skyline in the distance several times, at both ends of the tailings
They were followed by about 20 W2 walkers, a couple of small groups trying to find shortcuts across , but still ending up together on the track beside the river to return.
A handful of W3 walkers decided they didn’t need a handicap of carrying rocks or gravel in their shoes , and sensibly stuck to the river track.
It seems a waste of land the dredge tailings cover , but right from the days when the last dredge stopped operating in the early 60s, the authorities have been reluctant to allow trees to be planted or the land restored to production. A trial block of different pine species planted by Dick Dowland remain in the centre of the tailings since the early 60s.
If you are wondering about the photo attached this week, well I thought i would send in a picture of some gravel . Several members advised they were going to send me some photos , but I am still awaiting them !! Plenty of photos were taken soo….
They can be sent to photos@alexharriers.co.nz or garyhesson4nz@outlook.co.nz
It is a holiday weekend this Saturday for King Charlie , so it will be a local outing from Centennial Park.
Meet up at 1pm and depending on how many turn up ,we may have just one or 2 groups walking.
At this stage no afternoon tea , will probably go straight to pub after walk.
Keep an eye on email later in week in case this changes or committee has news for you, after Wednesdays meeting.
Could be a bit of rain for rest of week , but should be just a bit of cloud hanging around by Saturday. But could be a little damp and slippery under foot, so make sure you have good footwear.
See you then
Gary
PS Subscriptions should have been paid by beginning of June , so if not paid , do so by this weekend to make our treasurer John a happy man .
This could avoid exploring the bottom of Lake Dunstan in a pair of concrete gumboots.
Part 2
Well , i did say plenty of folk were taking photos last Saturday . Now I just have to train them to send photos in before i send next email out.
Club constitution . At the AGM the committee presented an updated club constitution for approval. As this is a legal document, we have to ensure it meets all the legal requirements of the new legislation. So the committee is still working on it , dotting “I”s and crossing “T” s. We hope to have the final document sorted by next month. So at a walk in July or August , we will likely incorporate a special meeting to pass the new club constitution .
Mid Year dinner Saturday 28 June 2025 ,cost $35 Senior citizens rooms Alexandra. Barrie should have a list out in attendance book in next week or so
First Aid Training. The club is once again offering to pay half the cost for members to do their training. If interested , contact Sue Helm 027 666 8866 who is co-ordinating this and will organise a date with trainers when we have an idea of how many will do training and cost.
Treasurer reminds members subs due by 1 June , pay up or Luigi may fit you for a concrete overcoat.
This Saturday will be an informal walk ,departing 1:00pm for a local outing. What this means is no afternoon tea , so it will either be straight home , or have an extra drink at the pub.
Rain should all be over by harrier time , so hope to see you there
