Olrig to Ophir

This Saturday we are closer to home , with a walk from Como Villa in Earnscleugh. Please meet corner Walton & Thompson streets at 1:00PM
To car pool out with A-Ls duty pack for afternoon tea.

The outing Olrig to Ophir went off ok ,under generally cloudy skies ,warmish but no rain. If you looked at the long range weather forecast earlier in the week, you would expect heavy rain. But as the week went on ,it changed to showers , and by Saturday itself it was down to evening showers.
Which finally turned up early hours of Sunday morning.

So around a dozen or so walkers tackled the 18km or so walk from Olrig to Ophir under good conditions.. Their imaginations getting carried away with a photo sent in of some rocks. Inspired by the battle earlier in the week between a Takahe and a Tuatara , they were sure they could see on top of the big rock , a Tuatara chasing a Tortoise. Hope a drink or 2 helped those hallucinations.

About 15 or so got on their bikes to bike over from Olrig to Ophir , then returning along the rail trail. They must have had fully charged bikes, as they would have been early back at Olrig by 2:30pm. Obviously no one there to take them by the tail and divert them up Tiger’s Hill.

The handful of W3 walkers stayed on the bus to Ophir , going for a wander in the area , whilst waiting for the long walkers to appear.
The W2 walkers got off the bus in the Tiger hill area, returning along the rail trail. Apparently it was a very long train , with walkers spread out for miles.

In fact a couple of the front runners caught up with Olrig Billy gang , heading up and over the hills at the bridge.

This Saturday we head for Chapman’s Como Villa , before heading down to the river track and tailings.DOC inspectors will be on hand to check for walkers trying to smuggle out gravel from the tailings in their shoes and boots. There may be a little cloud around ,but no rain to worry about.

Hope to see you there.
