Arrowtown Adventures!

Hi All
As well as an update below from Gary (thanks also to Glenda for being Gary’s scribe), there are a couple of other messages from Sue and Michael.

Cheers, Jill on behalf of your Committee

  • Sue Helm has been organising the Harrier Curling team each winter and is looking for new curling people to join the team:
We are a small bunch that have a lot of fun on Thursday nights through winter. We are looking for a few new members. Please email Sue at helm@xtra.co.nz for more information or if you are interested in joining them!
  • From Michael – If you havent registered with Mike for the long walk this weekend, please do so asap. We are finalising the details at our committee meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.
The afternoon tea spot will be at the intersection of Matilda Rise and Thomson Ardgour Roads – go there via Bendigo Loop Road, then Matilda Rise Road to get to Thomson Gorge Road. More information after the meeting.

Gary’s Update
This coming Saturday the Harriers are having their Big Day Out at Thomson’s Gorge. There will be another email coming later in the week, giving details, after the committee meeting on Wednesday night to irons things out.

Last Saturday the weather gods were smiling once again on our Harrier trip to Arrowtown. It is usually quite popular, and this year was no exception. We had a beautiful afternoon to view the autumn colours, which we were lucky enough to see at their most impressive.

I’m pleased to report that there are still plenty of tourists coming to boost our economy. They were wandering around the streets and tracks again this year. Many seemed to head for where our bus was parked to take photos of each other and the scenery. There was also some interest in our afternoon tea with one member of the public waving his eftpos card at us and asking how much the sausages cost. There was more interest in potential sausages from a small white dog who did his best to look cute and hungry but also came away disappointed. Just like some duck hunters were, going by the number of ducks flying overhead.

The W3’s explored a river track with their leader who said she was heading for the bakery, but when her group caught up at the bakery there was no sign of her or even a trail of breadcrumbs to follow. Having lost their leader, they thought about checking the bars for her but decided to head back to the bus to wait there in the sun. The W2’s came in smiling so they must have had a good walk along the river. No groups came in late this year, not even the usual culprits, the W1s. The 1s had been dropped off near the Bungy Bridge to walk into Arrowtown on the Arrow Bridges Trail. That went well until they met two suspension Bridges which thrilled some members of the group a lot, but not everyone enjoyed them.

I’ll try and put in a good word for fine weather this Saturday. I don’t know if I’ll be there though. However, I am sure my spies will report back to me. If not, I’ll just make it up.

Have a good walk/run at Thomson’s Gorge and remember to dress warmly because you’ll be starting at higher altitudes and may have your heads the clouds.

Gary
